While I value the anonymity that a minimal digital footprint offers me, I also realise this could be an opportunity to share more of my work beyond my couch.

Moving beyond the couch is indeed a way to bring newness to my life, but more importantly, it is about un-engineering the ways I have kept myself small throughout my life. Like any beginning, I am constantly in dance. On some days, I am excited about all the possibilities; on others, dread dominates. Ambivalence is ever so perennial for us as human beings.

I imagine this may ring true for most people, and maybe not some. But for those pondering the new year, what are your hopes for 2023?

Is it more joy or fulfilment? How would you like your personal life to look?

Do you find meaning in your job? Do you want to make a more meaningful contribution through your business? Does your vocation align with my values?

And are you happy with the current state of your relationships? Are there any relationships you would like to rekindle or deepen? Perhaps there has been a rupture in a relationship that you want to repair. Who will be your support system during rough times this year?

While writing out physical fitness goals and entering into new gym contracts may be up on the list for you, have you thought about how you will tend to your mental health as well? How are you committing to knowing yourself better? Are there any habits and patterns you seem to slip into despite your best efforts to change them?

We are fundamentally beings of conflict—we want this, but we also don’t want that. We want to hide, but we also want to be seen. I want to be this person, but I am also this. So how about this time, you posture compassion and curiosity. How about you explore the dialect of your real and ideal self, and get to see it, hear it, and feel it? How about this time, you resist the urge to judge, fix or get rid of the undesirable parts of you, as is often the case at the start of every year with resolutions, intentions, and goals.

The truth is, it is more about being and becoming. You never arrive. You are not meant to arrive. Life is the midpoint between where you are now and where you are going. It is a dialectical process in which we constantly hold opposing positions with elasticity.

My hope and wish for you this year is to hold those tensions loosely and gently. This act may require you to make tough choices. Leaving the familiar and sitting in the discomfort of uncertainty and not knowing, at other times, perching on the precipice of optimism. At whichever point of the dialectic you find yourself, my hope for you is that you have faith and trust your process. May it be a meaningful year for you.

Warmly,

Batetshi

Over the past while, I have been exploring the idea of my social media presence.
